Evaluation of the Texas Technology Immersion Pilot (eTxTIP)

The Evaluation of the Texas Technology Immersion Pilot (eTxTIP) is a multi-year research project that studies the effect of technology immersion on student learning and teacher proficiency in Texas middle schools. The study compares outcomes across campus, teacher, and student-level outcomes for a set of 22 middle schools in which all teachers and students received laptops and a matched comparison sample of 22 middle schools that did not receive laptops.

Findings from the Second Year May 2007PDF (1 MB)
The second year report extends the analyses presented in the study's First Year Report (April 2006) to include data collected over the 2005-06 school year and incorporates classroom observation data collected during the fall 2004, spring 2005, and spring 2006 semesters. Findings are generally consistent with those of the First Year Report and indicate that laptop immersion has a strong positive effect on students' and teachers' technology proficiency but does not produce a significant effect on measures of student achievement.

An Analysis of the Baseline Conditions and First-Year Implementation of Technology Immersion in Middle School December 2006PDF (991 KB)
This report focuses on information gathered during site visits to eTxTIP's 44 Texas middle schools during the first year of implementation (2004-05). Site visits were conducted in fall 2004 and spring 2005 and included classroom observations, interviews with principals and district administrators, as well as focus group discussions with teachers and students. The report documents baseline conditions in the middle schools and describes the challenges that immersion campuses encountered as they struggled to integrate laptops into classroom instruction.

The Effects of Technology Immersion on Teaching and Learning: Evidence from Observations of Sixth-Grade Classrooms June 2006PDF (498 KB)
This report uses data collected during classroom observations in sixth-grade classrooms to investigate how laptops are used to support student learning and whether teachers are using technology to create intellectually challenging lessons.

First Year Results April 2006PDF (1005 KB)
Using teacher and student survey data as well as students' standardized testing outcomes, this report uses hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) statistical methodologies to assess the effects of laptop immersion on student achievement and outcomes related to students' proficiency in using technology, satisfaction with their schooling, and self-directed learning during the first year of implementation. Analyses also measure the effect of immersion on teachers' technical proficiency, professional productivity, and classroom use of technology.
